Obelus The polyptych Obelus represents doubt — a state that is neither one nor the other and denies any assertion of something that is not something else. The creative journey I began with the Obelus project transformed into an inner odyssey, where I felt the need to comprehend and express the emotions that were forming within me at the time. As I immersed myself in this process, I sifted through the emotional impressions created by the information surrounding me. Ongoing discussions about the war and the potential invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the need to prepare essential items for possible migration — all of this created an internal state of division between accepting and rejecting the possibility of war, adding even greater anxiety. While searching for the right colors, textures, and style for the Obelus series, I discovered numerous symbols and diagonals that were constantly shifting but didn’t always offer a clear interpretation. This work became an embodiment of internal division, which manifested externally in the face of the possibility of war at the end of 2021. The inspiration for this series came from the spirit of the Dnipro River, which became a symbol of life connecting the past, present, and future. Its grandeur and stillness are an image that carries the spirit of history across generations, binding countless fates, events, and epochs into a unified whole. Watching its waters, I felt how each wave carried the memory of struggles, triumphs, and tragedies that have shaped Ukraine's identity. This image of a river, timelessly flowing through history, helped me find a connection between my personal emotions and the collective experience passed down through generations. In the polyptych Obelus, the Dnipro became a reflection of my inner state and a symbol of strength that unites division and hope, anxiety and acceptance.
